Excursion Information - North Head

The following information will help you plan for your school excursion to North Head Sanctuary.

Who do excursions cater for?

Excursions at North Head currently cater for students studying the Stage 6 Geography Biophysical Interactions unit. The program is designed to meet the following syllabus outcomes:

  • P2 – describes the interactions between the four components which defines the biophysical environment.
  • P2 – describes the interactions between the four components which defines the biophysical environment.
  • P3 – explains how a specific environment functions in terms of biophysical factors
  • P9 – uses maps, graphs and statistics, photographs and fieldwork to conduct geographical inquiries.

New programs for both primary and secondary students are currently in development. Programs can also be developed in consultation with teachers who would like to arrange an excursion to support student learning in other areas.

Payment

The Biophysical Interactions excursion costs $20 per student (GST inclusive) with a minimum fee of $240 required. Accompanying teachers attend free of charge. An invoice will be sent to the school following the excursion.

Teacher/Student ratios

The Harbour Trust’s safety policy sets the following requirements for accompanying adults. It is essential that accompanying adults play an active role in student supervision during the excursion. Primary – 1 adult: 10 students; Secondary – 1 adult: 20 students; Special needs – 1 adult: 1 students.

Numbers

There is no minimum student number required for the Biophysical Interactions program, however a minimum fee of $240 (equivalent to 12 students) is payable for groups with less than 12 students. Due to the nature of the site, the maximum number of students per excursion is 50. Schools wishing to book larger groups can book two or more excursion dates.

What happens in the event of wet weather?

Excursions will run in the event of wet weather. Students must bring protective clothing and appropriate footwear.

Are refreshments available?

Students and teachers should being their own refreshments as there is no food outlet at North Head Sanctuary.

What should we bring?

Students should bring a hat, sunscreen, a packed-lunch, drinking water, wet weather gear, pencils and a clipboard. As the program is conducted outside and follows bushland trails, it is essential that students wear appropriate clothing and covered walking shoes. Bags may be left in the designated storage area while the excursion is underway.

Getting to North Head Sanctuary

North Head Sanctuary is located at the former School of Artillery, Manly. The entrance is on North Head Scenic Drive, just beyond Manly Hospital. For information on travelling to North Head via public transport, please visit www.131500.com.au. There is parking for cars and buses on site. Groups meet at the Gatehouse Visitor Centre, inside the Sanctuary. Booked groups will receive a map with their booking confirmation.
