Heritage Conservation Volunteers

Crane restoration volunteers on Cockatoo Island

The Heritage Conservation Volunteer Team on Cockatoo Island is always looking for skilled tradespeople or simply those with an interest in conserving heritage equipment, including lathes, large planning machines, steam cranes and even the 30-foot Captain's launch from HMAS Sydney. The program is run each Monday and training is provided. Please enquire any time by contacting the Visitor and Volunteer Services Manager on (02) 8969 2100.

Your role

As a Heritage Conservation Volunteer you would assist our trained specialists to conserve equipment, including cranes and other industrial machinery.

Your qualifications

You don't need any formal qualifications to contribute to our team. However, many of our Heritage Conservation Volunteers have knowledge and experience in areas such as electrical fitting, pattern making, fitting and turning, blacksmithing, boiler making and mechanical engineering.

Heritage gardening volunteer on Cockatoo Island

Heritage Gardening Volunteers

The Heritage Gardening Team is involved in reinstating and maintaining traditional gardens ranging from late Victorian style garden beds to the 1950s plantings. Our current project is replanting the heritage gardens of Cockatoo Island.

Your role

You will be getting your hands dirty as part of the team carrying out gardening projects particularly on Cockatoo Island. Tasks include mulching, building up soil in garden beds, planting, weeding and watering.

Your qualifications

No formal qualifications needed apart from enthusiasm and an interest in gardening. This role involves some light physical work, so an appropriate level of fitness is required.

Information on the Volunteer Program

The community is a very important part of the Harbour Trust. We commenced our very successful series of public programs in 2002 and last year expanded the program to over 130 volunteers covering nine different volunteer roles. Our program adheres to the guidelines set down by Volunteering Australia.
