Harbour Trust: LeasingNorth Head Sanctuary: the natural setting for your business.
North Head is an iconic and much treasured landmark in Sydney. Its harbour views, parade ground and bushland are a perfect setting for education and research, health and well being services, accommodation and sanctuary support facilities. Now, the Harbour Trust is proud to be creating a unique commercial community where like-minded businesses, both small and large, can enjoy the benefits of panoramic views, abundant bushland, and join a community of people and organisations committed to enhancing and sharing the special values of this place.
One of Sydney's landmark sites is now openWith a range of art deco style functional buildings centred around a grand parade ground, close to public transport and Manly Hospital, the former School of Artillery will attract businesses, institutions, cultural bodies, community uses and individuals. This priceless asset is a once in a lifetime opportunity to work in an environment that combines the advantages of the bush with the proximity of the city. Stunning views and seclusion, peace and tranquility, North Head has it all. SettingThe former School of Artillery occupies an area of 72 hectares located on the highest part of North Head peninsula. this site is surrounded by Sydney Harbour National Park, including the former Quarantine Station. There are over 80 buildings on the site comprising a barracks complex, mess buildings, 26 houses and steel clad sheds, garages and storage buildings. In additional there is a magnificent parade ground, outdoor sports facilities and car parks. Buildings and Proposed UsesThe Management Plan for the former School of Artillery calls for uses for the buildings which are compatible with, and contribute positively towards, a sanctuary. These include education, research and a range of other uses which promote the health and wellbeing of people and uses which support the Trust's goal of helping people to access, enjoy and protect the special qualities of North Head. Education and ResearchPossible education and research outcomes on the site include research into the North Head ecosystem (including mammal, bird, reptile, pest, fire, habitat modification, animal reintroduction and vegetation research), the impact of humans on urban ecosystems, the modification of animal behaviour in urban environments, as well as broader environmental research and education on topics such as climate change, water management, sustainable energy technologies and sustainable living practices. Health and Well BeingIn support of the traditional uses of North Head as a place of spiritual and physical healing, the Trust is seeking uses which promote the physical and spiritual well being of people - healthy minds, healthy bodies and a healthy environment. Such uses may include health retreats, fitness training, yoga and meditation, lifestyle, stress or addiction management and philosophical, spiritual, cultural and natural development and awareness. Accommodation and Support ServicesSupport services required to promote access, study and enjoyment of the site might include accommodation, camping, a cafe, restaurant, bar, function centre, training or conference facilities, communal meeting facilities, communal sports facilities and other visitor and educational support facilities. LeasingThe former School of Artillery, North Head, Management Plan proposes in broad terms how buildings should be adaptively re-used. The use of the buildings and facilities is subject to a number of constraints, including access and parking issues, heritage and environmental matters and public access. Issues such as compatibility with the management of the ecosystem, compatibility with the heritage values and character of the site, traffic generation, noise, light spillages and bushfire risk will be important considerations in selecting appropriate uses.
