Headland Park (Middle Head, Georges Heights, Chowder Bay): Planning

Planning the Future

A Vision for a Headland Park

Aerial of Chowder BayAerial of Chowder Bay

The vision for Middle Head-Georges Heights and Chowder Bay is the creation of a Headland Park.

The Headland Park will link all the elements of former Defence lands with the great natural and cultural assets of the Middle Head plateau.

An area previously little known and closed off to the public will be opened up, experienced and interpreted - the Aboriginal use of the area prior to 1788, early Aboriginal and European contact and the long defence history of the peninsula.

The area of bushland on Trust land will more than double. Improved drainage and stormwater management will aid the regeneration and expansion of the bushland slopes.

A number of entry points to the Headland Park will be created - the first at the former 30 Terminal Transport depot. A location affording many magnificent vantage points over land and water and easy access to examples of all of the main features of the site: panoramic views, bushland, fortifications, military establishments.

Facilities and buildings will be adapted for uses compatible with their character and heritage, including recreational and community uses. The establishment of an Aboriginal Cultural Centre will be investigated in conjunction with the Aboriginal community. It would serve to explain the indigenous history of the Sydney region and to mark Bungaree's farm, Governor Macquarie's model farm experiment.

A network of walking tracks will be constructed to link natural environment, indigenous and military sites and facilities.

Recreational and community sporting facilities will cater for netball, basketball, football, soccer, cricket and tennis. Ovals will be retained and the landscape setting improved.
