Volunteer Recruitment

Become part of a progressive team that is conserving and showcasing some of Sydney Harbour's hidden gems, including Cockatoo Island, Headland Park in Mosman and North Head Sanctuary.

Visitor Services Volunteers

The Harbour Trust is currently recruiting Visitor Services volunteers. This is a 'meet & greet' and information role based at two of our sites, Cockatoo Island and North Head Sanctuary at Manly. If you like meeting new people and helping visitors to enjoy our magnificent harbour sites and can spare a day once a fortnight, please fill in the application form or contact Catherine on (02) 8969 2112.

Applications close Monday, 18 August 2008. Training will be run over September and includes tours of Harbour Trust sites, on-site visitor services training, customer service skills and first-aid training.

Heritage Conservation Volunteers

The Heritage Conservation Volunteer Team on Cockatoo Island is always looking for skilled tradespeople or simply those with an interest in conserving heritage equipment, including lathes, large planing machines, cranes and even the 30-foot Captain's Launch from HMAS Sydney. The program is run each Monday and training is provided. Please enquire any time.

Information on the Volunteer Program

The community is very important part of the Harbour Trust. We commenced our very successful series of public programs in 2002 and last year expanded the program to over 100 volunteers covering eight different volunteer roles.

Our program adheres to the guidelines set down by Volunteering Australia. All Harbour Trust volunteers have both rights and responsibilities, are provided with training and a uniform and have opportunities for social interaction. Volunteers are supervised by the Public Programs Coordinator.

Volunteer Positions

Visitor Services

The Visitor Services role was introduced at Cockatoo Island in 2007 at Cockatoo Island and North Head Sanctuary. This has allowed the Harbour Trust to open up these precious sites to the general public.

North Head Sanctuary contains historic military buildings as well as pristine bushland with magnificent harbour and city views and unique flora and fauna.

Cockatoo Island is the site of Australia's most historic shipyard as well as a convict gaol. Current projects include a new campground, building conservation and a cliff top walk.

Heritage Conservation Volunteer

The Heritage Conservation Team works on special projects, using their technical skills to help conserve industrial heritage items.

Your Role

Visitor Services

As a Visitor Services Volunteer you would be the public face of the Harbour Trust and introduce these previously hidden sites to the public.

Volunteers meet and greet visitors, assist them in their visit to the site, tell them about other interesting Harbour Trust sites and sell guided tours and merchandise.

Volunteers are rostered in pairs on a fortnightly basis and alternate between Cockatoo Island and North Head. The roster covers seven days per week and is done three months in advance so that holidays and other appointments can be accommodated. We are looking for people who would be interested in volunteering on any day of the week, and particularly Saturday or Sunday.

Heritage Conservation Volunteer

As a Heritage Conservation Volunteer you would assist our trained specialists to conserve equipment including cranes and other industrial machinery. Heritage Conservation Volunteers have knowledge and experience in areas such as electrical fitting, pattern making, fitting and turning, blacksmithing, boiler making and mechanical engineering.

Your Qualifications

You do not need to have any prior experience to be a Visitor Services Volunteer but need to be a "people oriented" person who is keen to help us showcase these magnificent Sydney sites.

If you are interested in conserving industrial heritage, and have a technical background in a relevant field, you may wish to apply to join the Heritage Conservation Team.
