Work set to start at North Sydney’s Sub Base Platypus

The Harbour Trust is creating new parkland and public space at Sub Base Platypus in North Sydney. This work is known as the Torpedo Factory Renewal Project.

The Torpedo Factory Renewal Project comprises demolition of the harbour facing portion of the former Torpedo Factory building at Sub Base Platypus (and part of the High Street facing portion), to enable construction of:

  • Harbour foreshore parkland with a series of landscaped terraces
  • Public spaces that explore the site’s history
  • Solar power generation from roof-mounted panels and rainwater capture storage
  • Pedestrian connection to the foreshore and car parking.

Next steps and key stages of work

Taylor Construction Group Pty Ltd (Taylor) has been appointed as the Head Works Contractor for the Torpedo Factory Renewal Project at Sub Base Platypus in North Sydney.

Taylor has experience in adaptive re-use of heritage buildings, technical demolition and construction work in environmentally-sensitive locations.

Site handover to Taylor will occur on Monday 9 May 2022. The three key stages of works in this project are pre-construction; demolition; and construction and landscaping.

It is anticipated that the demolition stage will start in July 2022. More information on each stage will be provided before it commences. The Harbour Trust is aiming to open the new parkland and public space in early 2023.
