The Australian Register of Historic Vessels, administered by the Australian National Maritime Museum recognises the importance of preserving Australian naval history. Vessels such as Fast Motorboat (FMB) Sydney (45802) reveal the smaller-scale everyday transporting that made naval operations possible.
FMB Sydney – a smaller but mighty boat with a direct association to HMAS Sydney (III), as the launch as the carrier’s captain’s boat and to an important era in Australia’s naval history was recently formally recognised through inclusion on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels.
The vessel was part of HMAS Sydney (III) service during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Following her naval career, FMB Sydney eventually found her way into the care of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and over the years was restored by the talented Cockatoo Island restoration volunteers.
‘Historic vessels are more than objects they are real links to Australia’s maritime history and to the people and stories of the times’ said Harbour Trust Heritage and Design Director, Libby Bennett.
Inclusion on the historic register is another step in this historic vessel’s journey, soon to play a new role in adventure at Cockatoo Island, made possible by the dedication of the Harbour Trust and its restoration volunteers to preserve the vessel and its story.
