Now in its 40th year, the National Architecture Awards continue to recognise design excellence and its contribution to communities across Australia and abroad. At a ceremony on Thursday 4 November, Sub Base Platypus was awarded the prestigious 2021 Walter Burley Griffin Award due to work undertaken at the site to adaptively reuse significant heritage structures and transform the urban design.
Sub Base Platypus has continued to garner acclaim for the renewal works undertaken for the Harbour Trust. In May, Australia’s leading conservation body, the National Trust, named Sub Base Platypus the winner in the ‘Adaptive Re-use’ category at their National Heritage Award event. In July, the site went on to secure a pair of highly coveted awards, including the Heritage Award (NSW) and the Lloyd Rees Award (NSW) for Urban Design.
These awards are a testament to our collaborators on the Sub Base Platypus Renewal Project, Lahznimmo architects and ASPECT Studios. Furthermore, the latest victory at the National Architecture Awards validates the Harbour Trust’s efforts to sympathetically re-imagine and enhance public accessibility to this significant site.
