The report was prepared for the Harbour Trust by Elton Consulting. It includes findings from targeted consultations with the First Nations community undertaken by specialist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement consultancy Two Point Co.
Since 2001, the Harbour Trust has worked to weave Cockatoo Island into the life of Sydney. We have undertaken substantial remediation and preservation work; enabled cultural, recreation and community uses; and shared stories that reveal the island’s rich, layered history.
While this approach has broad support, our city continues to grow and change. As such, it was timely for us to engage the community in a discussion around what is most valued about Cockatoo Island as well as ideas and opportunities for its future.
In July 2019, we undertook highly-targeted engagement activities (supported by wide-reaching communications), attracting more than 800 participants. This consultation process provided the Harbour Trust with valuable feedback and will help inform our actions, priorities, and future direction with regards to Cockatoo Island.
