The Cockatoo Island / Wareamah Master Plan has been recognised at the 2025 Australian Urban Design Awards in the Strategic Design and Policy category.

This is the latest accolade for the master plan, following on from the 2024 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects NSW and National Awards for Cultural Heritage.

The Harbour Trust Executive Director Janet Carding said, ‘We celebrate Tyrrell Studio in collaboration with Mott McDonald, Klok Advisory, Bangawarra and Left Bank as a winner of this notable category. Thank you to the Australian Institute of Architects for recognising Cockatoo Island / Wareamah Master Plan’s vision to considerately reactivate and transform the largest island in Sydney Harbour’

Lead designer Mark Tyrrell said ‘Tyrrell Studio and our extended project team are immensely proud to have our design work recognised by this prestigious national award. The master plan is both respectful and visionary, teasing out the complex threads of the island's history and weaving them into a transformational design strategy. Thank you to the Australian Urban Design Awards jury and congratulations to all award winners and finalists.’

The Cockatoo Island / Wareamah Master Plan project reflects the combined efforts of the Harbour Trust, Tyrrell Studio (design lead), Mott Macdonald (precincts advisory lead), Klok Advisory (financial modelling), Bangawarra (First Nations design) and Left Bank (cultural activation).
