The Harbour Trust is proud to be a major partner for the ICOMOS General Assembly and Scientific Symposium (GA2023), which commences in Sydney later this month.

An initiative of International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), GA2023 will see heritage conservation and management professionals from across the world come together between 31 August and 9 September to exchange ideas and participate in a range of exciting events, including a Youth Forum at Cockatoo Island / Wareamah.

Running 1 to 3 September, the Youth Forum is an opportunity for us to showcase the significant heritage values of Cockatoo Island to emerging professionals spanning a variety of disciplines, including archaeology, academia, urban planning and architecture. Notably, delegates will have an opportunity to explore the remnants of the historic dockyard (1857-1991) as well as the UNESCO World Heritage listed Convict Site, which offers a window into the era when the island was a convict gaol (1839-69).

The island’s iconic landmarks and distinctive terrain will provide delegates with a source of inspiration as they attend a range of educational sessions. In addition to learning from established heritage professionals, they will have opportunities to engage in a dialogue with their peers, debate contemporary issues, workshop ideas and even contribute to future outcomes.

We look forward to hosting the next generation of heritage professionals at Cockatoo Island and accommodating them in our award-winning waterfront campground. Our partnership with ICOMOS on GA2023, including the Youth Forum, reflects our commitment to protect and amplify the heritage values of our extraordinary places through their conservation and adaptive reuse as well as through public programming and storytelling.
