The Harbour Trust is proud to announce its commitment to celebrating NAIDOC Week (2 to 9 July 2023) and highlighting its partnerships with First Nations organisations. Through these collaborations, the Harbour Trust aims to promote awareness for First Nations culture.

This year's NAIDOC Week theme, "For Our Elders," highlights the important role Elders play in First Nation communities and families. Elders guide, share knowledge, influence and shape First Nation People across every generation.

Babana Aboriginal Mens Group

Over the past two years, we have partnered with Babana Aboriginal Men's Group to support improved social outcomes for men and women in Aboriginal communities. As part of our partnership, Babana run events across our network of extraordinary places on Sydney Harbour. We are proud to support a group that addresses crucial social issues, including mental health and wellbeing, and is focused on uniting the community and affirming positive values of traditional Aboriginal culture.

Bush to Bowl

In June, we partnered with Bush to Bowl to host a series of bush tucker walking tours at North Head Sanctuary in Manly and Headland Park (Georges Heights and Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh) in Mosman. Led by knowledgeable First Nations guides, these tours provided an immersive experience that educated participants about First Nations customs, beliefs, and practices, cultivating a deeper appreciation for the connection to Country. To make these tours more accessible, the Harbour Trust subsidised the costs of these tours, making them free for all attendees. Additionally, the partnership with Bush to Bowl extends to educational initiatives, with trialling a bush tucker education tour offering for school groups at North Head Sanctuary in Manly.

Dennis Golding

We are thrilled to be working with renowned Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist, Dennis Golding, on a significant project at Sub Base Platypus in North Sydney, Cammeraygal Country. Dennis will create three stunning artworks as part of the Torpedo Factory Renewal Project, honouring and celebrating Country and culture. His concept will showcase the connection between the waterways of Cammeraygal Country, the plants incorporated into the project's new parkland, and the distinctive edges of the Torpedo Factory's historic roofline. Dennis plans to engage local youth in exploring themes and ideas that celebrate culture, identity, and Country. Furthermore, he will collaborate with his mother, Vicki Golding, a talented artist from Bidjigal Country, to produce these murals.

As NAIDOC Week approaches, the Harbour Trust's commitment to promoting and celebrating First Nations culture remains strong. Through these partnerships, we aim to foster understanding, respect, and appreciation for Australia's rich Indigenous heritage.
