Macquarie Lightstation at Vaucluse in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs will join other buildings around the world in being lit up in blue and green.
Organised by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), World Maritime Day highlights the importance of the maritime industry and underlines maritime security, the maritime environment, safety and shipping. This year’s theme 'New technologies for greener shipping' reflects the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future.
“The Harbour Trust is excited to support World Maritime Day for the first time. The Macquarie Lightstation is the site of the Australia’s oldest lighthouse which is still used as a guiding light for ships coming into the safe waters of the harbour, playing an important role in the shipping industry. As the stewardess of this historically significant foreshore site on Sydney Harbour, the Harbour Trust is committed to protect, preserve and make our sites accessible for all Australians.” says Janet Carding, Executive Director of the Harbour Trust.
The refreshed Macquarie Lightstation Management Plan was approved in October 2020, following stakeholder consultation. This includes new interpretation for its interior, which was regularly opened to the public before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Harbour Trust plans to reinstate public tours in the coming months.
Originally built in 1818, the Macquarie Lightstation is the site of the Australia’s oldest lighthouse and is still in operation today, by AMSA. The lighthouse is one of a small number of prominent landmarks on Sydney Harbour, that demonstrates Australia’s relationship with the sea. The Macquarie Lightstation precinct is of significant heritage importance, with convict built foundational structures still in existence.
