North Head Sanctuary (Former School of Artillery), North Head Scenic Drive, Manly. Meet at the Gatehouse Vistor Centre.

Tour Description

Discover the military history and natural beauty of North Head – occupied by the military since 1934.

This guided tour includes the magnificent parade ground, examples of the art deco buildings, authentic WWII tunnels and pristine bushland.

Over two hours the walking tour covers four kilometres and includes bush tracks, stairs and underground tunnels.

Presented in partnership with North Fort - Home of the National Artillery Museum.

Cost $12 adult, $8 child/concession, $30 family (2 adults and up to 3 concessions)

Defence of Sydney - North Head Fortress Tour

Tour Description

Join the North Fort Artillery Museum, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services and the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust on a military discovery tour of North Head.

You'll venture through tunnels and fortifications, explore the museum, see life through the eyes of a soldier and discover the myriad defence equipment that makes North Head so unique.

Proudly presented by: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service - Sydney Region, Army History Unit / Royal Australian Artillery Historical Company and Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

Tunnels, Tracks and Tales

Headland Park, Mosman.

Tours depart from cnr of Suakin Drive and Commonwealth Avenue, Headland Park.

Tour Description

Explore Defence fortifications hidden away for more than 100 years, beautiful bushland and see new and magnificent harbour views.

See the historic submariners Miners' Depot and follow a track through bushland to Georges Heights, occupied by the military since the 1870s.

Go into 300m of tunnels, gun emplacements and enjoy these unique views of the Harbour.

$8 adult, $5 child/concession, $20 family (2 adults and up to 3 concessions)

Note: a minimum of 10 people is required for the tour to go ahead.

Conditions

The tour involves walking along a steep bush track that includes steps and going into dark tunnels.

Macquarie Lighthouse

Where

Macquarie Lighthouse, Old South Head Road, Vaucluse

Tour Description

Explore Australia's first and longest operating navigational light. Take a tour to learn about the history of this remarkable place and see magnificent harbour and city views from the top.

Macquarie Lighthouse was originally built in 1818, designed by convict architect, Francis Greenway.

The stone used in the lighthouse eroded and the current tower was built in 1883 to replace the original.

lThe lighthouse is still used for its initially intended purpose - as a guiding light for sailors showing the way to the harbour entrance.

Conditions

The tour includes climbing the 100 stairs to the top of the lighthouse.
