North Head Tracks, trails and visitor centre closed to public on 3 October

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has declared an ‘Extreme’ fire danger rating for Tuesday 3 October and put a total fire ban in place. As a result of this declaration, all bush tracks and trails at North Head Sanctuary will be closed to the public on Tuesday 3 October.

Historic wall being repaired at North Head Sanctuary

The Harbour Trust is carefully restoring a stone wall at North Head Sanctuary, Manly that partially collapsed due to an extreme weather event in March 2022. Unprecedented rain during this event led to a rapid build-up of water at the base of the wall, undermining its foundations.

New Torpedo Factory Precinct at Sub Base Platypus opens to the public

Work to revitalise the former Torpedo Factory at Sub Base Platypus, North Sydney, reached an important milestone this month – the completion of the Torpedo Factory Precinct. To celebrate, we hosted a community day on Saturday 16 September.

As a result of this declaration, all bush tracks and trails at North Head Sanctuary and the neighbouring Sydney Harbour National Park will be closed to the public on Wednesday 20 September.

North Head Sanctuary Draft Master Plan open for public feedback (media release)

The Harbour Trust today announced the release of its North Head Sanctuary Draft Master Plan, which outlines its vision to make the headland a more welcoming walking place, regenerate its natural landscape and strengthen its role as an important sanctuary for endangered species, celebrate its First Nations significance, and restore and activate its rich military heritage.

The Harbour Trust has created a draft master plan for North Head Sanctuary and released it for public exhibition. The North Head Sanctuary Draft Master Plan is available for feedback until 5pm AEDT on Tuesday 31 October 2023. Have your say and register to attend an online information session on Thursday 21 September.

Emerging heritage professionals contribute to the future of Cockatoo Island

Last week, the Harbour Trust had the privilege of hosting a special gathering of young and emerging heritage conservation and management professionals at Cockatoo Island / Wareamah. Held in partnership with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the General Assembly and Scientific Symposium (GA2023) Youth Forum saw young and emerging professionals from around the world gather at the historic island between 1 and 3 September. Across 3 days, delegates connected with their peers, heard from thought leaders, debated contemporary issues and workshopped ideas.

New limited edition coin featuring Cockatoo Island / Wareamah

We are very excited to announce that the Royal Australian Mint (the Mint), in partnership with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), has launched a stunning new $5 coin featuring Cockatoo Island / Wareamah. The Mint has partnered with ICOMOS to produce this coin in recognition of the 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium being held in Australia for the first time.
