New limited edition coin featuring Cockatoo Island / Wareamah

We are very excited to announce that the Royal Australian Mint (the Mint), in partnership with the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), has launched a stunning new $5 coin featuring Cockatoo Island / Wareamah.

The Mint has partnered with ICOMOS to produce this coin in recognition of the 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium being held in Australia for the first time.

Designed by Tony Dean, the coin depicts 20 Australian World Heritage Properties surrounded by a central handprint, fan palm frond and shell fossil symbolizing our natural, built and Indigenous heritage. The frosted coin also features the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, designed by renowned British engraver, Jody Clark.

The 20 Australian sites inscribed on the World Heritage List are: 

In 2010, the Cockatoo Island Convict Site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with 10 other heritage sites nationwide. These sites are collectively known as the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property.
