Torpedo Factory Renewal Project

Formerly a torpedo factory, submarine base and gas works, Sub Base Platypus is an emerging community recreation and work hub in North Sydney, homeland of the Cammeraygal people.

The Harbour Trust has successfully completed the Torpedo Factory Renewal Project, resulting in further improvements to the site for the benefit of all Australians.

Torpedo Factory Precinct

Between July 2022 and September 2023, the Harbour Trust partially demolished the former factory and revitalised it as a sheltered public space. The new Torpedo Factory Precinct features a vantage point of Neutral Bay, a three-piece artwork by Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding, an event and storytelling space featuring historical artefacts, a car park with electric vehicle charging stations, rainwater capture storage and roof-mounted solar panels.

The Torpedo Factory Precinct was officially opened to the public in September 2023. To celebrate, the Harbour Trust hosted  a community day on Saturday 16 September. Between 10am and 3pm, there was a range of free activities at the new precinct, including a traditional Aboriginal performance, live music, talks, guided tours and fun for kids.

Wirra Birra Park

The Harbour Trust has now delivered the final stage of the Torpedo Factory Renewal Project; namely, a new foreshore park. Opened to the public on 29 March 2024 (Good Friday), Wirra Birra Park is situated on the sandstone bench at the foot of the new Torpedo Factory Precinct and provides visitors with a landscaped space where they can connect with Country and learn about native plants.

The Harbour Trust thanks the members of its now-disbanded Sub Base Platypus Community Advisory Committee for their support during the delivery of both the Torpedo Factory Precinct and Wirra Birra Park.
